When to trek the Cordillera Huayhuash: a season-by-season guide
Dry season, shoulder months and the rains: how the weather shapes trekking in the Huayhuash, and how to pick your dates.
By Huayhuash Trek Perú

The Andes of central Peru have two seasons that matter to trekkers: dry and wet. In the dry season the skies are usually clear; in the wet season, cloud, rain and snow close the high passes.
May to September: the dry season
This is trekking season. Days are usually clear and sunny, the trails are firm, and the views of Yerupajá, Siula Grande and Jirishanca are at their best. The trade-off is cold: nights at camps above 4,000 metres regularly drop below freezing, so a warm sleeping bag and good layers are essential.
June, July and August are the most stable months, and also the busiest. If you want these dates, it’s worth contacting us a few months ahead.
April and October: the shoulder months
The valleys are greener, there are fewer groups on the circuit, and mornings are often clear. Expect more afternoon cloud and the occasional shower or snowfall on the passes. With flexible plans and good waterproofs, they are a good time to go.
November to March: the rainy season
Heavy afternoon rain and snow on the passes make the full Huayhuash circuit difficult and less safe, and most expeditions don’t run. If you’re in Huaraz during these months, ask us about shorter day hikes in the Cordillera Blanca instead.
Our advice
- Aim for May to September, and book early for June–August.
- Add two or three days in Huaraz before the trek to acclimatise.
- Pack for both strong sun and freezing nights, whatever the month.
Send us a message with the dates you’re considering, and we’ll tell you what conditions to expect.
