How to get from Lima to Huaraz

Buses, flights and timing: the practical way to reach Huaraz, the starting point for every trek in the Cordillera Huayhuash and Blanca.

Every trek we run starts in Huaraz, the capital of the Áncash region and the base for both the Cordillera Blanca and the Cordillera Huayhuash. From Lima, you can get there by bus or by plane.

By bus (most travellers)

Several established companies run comfortable buses between Lima and Huaraz every day, with reclining or fully flat seats on the better services. The journey takes about eight hours, climbing from the coast through the desert and up over the Andes.

  • Day buses let you see the scenery as you climb into the mountains.
  • Overnight buses save a day, but you arrive tired, which makes acclimatising harder. Plan a rest day if you take one.

Book a seat on the upper deck at the front for the best views, and bring a warm layer: buses can be cold at night.

By air

There are limited flights from Lima to Anta airport, about 30 minutes from Huaraz. Schedules change, so check availability well in advance. Flying is quick, but remember you’ll arrive at 3,000 metres without the gradual climb of the bus, so take the first day easy.

Once you’re in Huaraz

  • Plan at least two or three days in Huaraz before a high trek (see our acclimatisation guide).
  • On the morning your trek starts, we pick you up from your hotel in the city.
  • Bring cash in soles for community fees on the trail. There are ATMs in Huaraz, but none in the mountains.
