Acclimatising in Huaraz: a simple three-day plan
The Huayhuash circuit crosses passes over 5,000 metres. Here is how we suggest using your first days in Huaraz so you arrive on the trail strong.
By Huayhuash Trek Perú

Huaraz sits at 3,050 metres. The Huayhuash circuit camps above 4,000 metres for a week and crosses passes over 5,000. Your body can adapt, but it needs time. The best way to give it that time is to “climb high, sleep low” for a few days before the trek.
Day 1: arrive and rest
After the bus from Lima, rest. Walk slowly around town, drink plenty of water, eat light and skip the alcohol. A gentle stroll up to a viewpoint above the city is plenty.
Day 2: a moderate hike
Choose a half-day hike that climbs to around 3,700–4,000 metres, such as the walk to Laguna Wilcacocha, with wide views of the Cordillera Blanca. Return to Huaraz to sleep.
Day 3: go higher
If you feel good, take on a longer day to a high lake such as Laguna Churup (around 4,450 m) or Laguna 69 (around 4,600 m). Both are good hikes, and they show you how well you’re adapting. Again, sleep in Huaraz.
Listen to your body
Mild headaches and poor sleep are common in the first days. Signs that you need to slow down or descend include a headache that won’t go away, nausea, unusual breathlessness at rest, or confusion. If this happens on the trek, tell your guide straight away.
A few simple habits help:
- Walk slowly, especially uphill. You should be able to talk.
- Drink two to three litres of water a day.
- Eat well, even if you’re not hungry.
- Talk to your doctor before travelling about altitude medication.
